About The Pilates Barns: Classical Pilates Studio near Harpenden
We don’t promise a quick fix. We promise real, long-lasting changes which will help you move and feel better every day.
The Pilates Barns is the culmination of 20 years of dedicated teaching and observation, born from a passion for helping individuals feel their best. Founder of The Pilates Barns, Clare Axon-Saunders, entered the Pilates sphere in 2006. Having only vaguely heard of Pilates in magazines, and not even sure how to pronounce it, Clare went to a local reformer studio - which were rare in those days - to find out if it really did improve core strength and flexibility! After a number of years of developing her own self practice, Clare went on to train as a teacher, and then set up her first studio in St Albans in 2009. The St Albans Studio was a huge success and eventually the business evolved to The Pilates Barns - the first classical Pilates Studio in Harpenden - situated on the stunning Luton Hoo Estate. Throughout her 2 decade (and counting!) journey, Clare has been passionate about the full Pilates Method that Joseph Pilates developed and she has stayed true to the roots of Contrology, now better known simply as Pilates. At our Studios you'll discover a comprehensive Pilates studio, featuring the full suite of traditional apparatus – a complete "Pilates Playground" – enabling us to facilitate lasting changes to both physique and mindset. Our Teachers & Standards
Every teacher at The Pilates Barns has undergone extensive comprehensive training programs, mastering the feel of the Pilates Method in their own body before developing their teaching skills. Our team holds recognised qualifications in classical Pilates, anatomy, and science-informed movement practices. Several of our teachers trained at renowned academies like PI Studios and JPilates, while others have trained directly under Clare to master her integrative approach combining classical sequencing with modern exercise science to deliver the highest standard of instruction and safe movement adaptation.
The Legacy of Pilates
Joseph Pilates envisioned a full system of apparatus, and people from all walks of life flocked to “Joe’s Gym” to enhance their physical well-being, build strength, and recover from ailments. His profound passion for human vitality, encapsulated in his seminal work Return to Life, drove him to invent iconic apparatus like the Cadillac and Reformer, alongside lesser-known yet equally ingenious pieces such as the Ped-o-Pul. Yet, his Method is anything but rigid or dull. Drawing inspiration from the inherent fluidity of animal movement and the joyous freedom of children at play, Joseph created exercises like Rolling Like a Ball, Monkey, and Elephant. At The Pilates Barns, we embrace this playful precision, ensuring our classes are as engaging and inspiring as they are effective.
Our Group Sessions: Tailored for Every Body
Joseph Pilates didn’t overcomplicate things and neither do we. All of our classes and courses use the full range of equipment.
Pilates Classes - Mixed Apparatus
The vast majority of our classes are known simply as Pilates Classes! These sessions are suitable for everyone as they are mixed abilities and each class offers progressive, adaptable instruction. Our instructors are adept at guiding all levels, ensuring a challenging yet safe and rewarding experience. These classes make use of all the Pilates apparatus including the Reformer, Tower, Barrels and Chairs. Prepare to feel invigorated, strong and ready to unlock your body’s full potential! All levels are welcome, and we encourage open communication to ensure your comfort and optimal progress.
The Tower, Barrels & Classical Mat
Combining the power of The Tower springs with the Classical Mat series is a true workout! The Tower helps you find alignment, gives you feedback and helps you feel it in your own body. The Mat challenges you to hold that same control using nothing but your own strength — a true measure of what you’ve built. The Barrels encourage the shoulders to relax and powers up the back of the body, helping you achieve great posture!
