Frequently Asked Questions

New to the Studio

Yes, absolutely! We welcome all ability levels. However, if you are completely new to the apparatus, we highly recommend starting with one of our 5 Week Beginners Courses which will introduce you to all the equipment. Alternatively, we have our Starter Pack or Discovery Pack (one private and one group session). These options ensure you learn how to handle the spring resistance safely and feel confident with the equipment before moving into group classes.

Wear comfortable, exercise clothing that allows you to move freely (like leggings and a top). Avoid clothing with zippers, buttons, or tie-backs, as these can damage the leather upholstery on our reformers and apparatus. For hygiene and safety, grip socks are advised in all sessions.

No, you do not need to bring anything with you! Both our Harpenden and St Albans studios are fully equipped with a comprehensive range of traditional classical apparatus, mats, and small props. Just bring your grip socks and a bottle of water and you’re ready to go!

If you have any of these thoughts or similar, please know that you are not alone! However, whether you join one of our Beginners Courses or start with a group class, you will be shown clearly what to do, our experienced and friendly teachers will give you all the help you need and ensure you’re not left struggling at the back of the class!

Membership & Booking Rules

We operate a strict 24-hour cancellation policy. If you cancel your session via our booking app outside of that 24-hour window, your credit is saved. For monthly memberships, you can book an extra make-up class another week within that same calendar month. For class passes, you can use your returned credit anytime before the pass expiry date.

Our standard memberships require just one month’s notice to cancel or change your tier. However, our specialised Term-Time Flexi memberships require a fixed 12-month commitment contract because they are calculated at a discounted flat monthly rate across fewer weeks of the year.

Term-Time memberships are designed specifically for parents, educators and frequent travellers. You are allocated 36 credits across the year to use as and when you are able to (monthly limits apply) You can reserve a regular weekly spot and pause as you need to, eg during school holidays, so you don’t have to worry about missing classes while the kids are off.

The Classical Method & Health

Most mainstream studios only use the reformer. At The Pilates Barns, we teach the full classical method as Joseph Pilates originally intended. We use a comprehensive system of spring-resistance equipment including the reformer, cadillac, wunda chair, ladder barrel, spine corrector, and more. We use the whole system to get you the absolute best physical results.

Yes, Pilates is renowned for injury rehabilitation and building deep core stability to combat back aches. However, if you are recovering from a clinical condition or acute injury, we strongly suggest booking a Discovery Pack or private 1:1 session first. This allows our expert teachers to assess your movement patterns and give you specific personal modifications before you enter a small group environment. We are always very happy to work alongside other health professionals.
