Frequently Asked Questions
Where is The Pilates Barns located?
We have two Studios; one in Harpenden, situated on the Luton Hoo Estate, and one in St Albans.
I am new to Pilates. Where should I start?
We recommend our Intro Offer which is 3 classes in 14 days. This gives you a chance to try different classes and teachers and find your best fit.
You might also consider starting with a Private Introductory Session if you have any particular concerns or are recovering from an injury.
What equipment do you have?
As a fully equipped studio, we have the full range of traditional apparatus, including the Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair, High Chair, Ladder Barrel, Pedi-Pole, and more.
I'm a beginner, can I join your classes?
Absolutely! We have dedicated Beginner classes and mixed ability classes too. Our teachers are very experienced in teaching beginners and will help you find your feet (literally!).
What is the difference between your Private Sessions and Group Sessions?
Private Sessions are one-on-one, fully customised to your specific body, goals, and any injuries. Group Sessions are generally limited to a maximum of 8 participants to maintain a high level of instructor attention, following a program tailored to the group’s general level.
I have back pain, can I do Pilates?
Yes! Pilates has been proven to be very beneficial for those experiencing back pain. Pilates safely and effectively builds muscles supporting your back and will help reduce pain, allowing you to move better and feel better.
Can I come if I am injured or recovering from an injury?
Depending on the injury, you may still be able to attend classes though we may require medical clearance for that. If you are recovering or rehabbing from an injury, you can attend classes – private sessions may be more appropriate in some cases. We are always happy to work alongside your other medical professionals to aid the recovery process.
How often should I come?
Joseph Pilates recommended three times a week but we understand it isn’t always easy to fit in! We suggest once per week if you are already doing another form of resistance training or two or three times per week if this is your only form of resistance training. This recommendation is based on UK physical activity guidelines.
Do you offer an introductory package for new clients?
Yes, we have two options:
The Intro Package – Take 3 classes within 14 days and try our Pilates Foundations, Pilates All Levels or our Feel Good morning classes. You can try different classes and teachers to find a time and style that works for you.
The Discovery Package – this offers you the best of both worlds with one private session and one group class. Start with a dedicated private session where your instructor will assess your movement and tailor the exercises to your needs. Once you’re feeling confident, jump into a group class to put your new knowledge to work and feel the collective motivation. Use your bundle anytime within 30 days and start practicing like a pro!
How much are your classes?
We offer a variety of memberships and packages to suit your situation. Private sessions start at £70 per session and group classes vary depending on your specific membership or package. Please see our pricing page for more details.
How do I book?
You can book via our app or by heading over to our class schedule. You will need to select a membership or package and then you will be able to book your classes.
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable, close-fitting, stretchy workout clothing. Something like leggings or jogging bottoms with a T Shirt is absolutely fine.
Do I need special socks or shoes?
All apparatus work is done in grip socks (also known as sticky socks) for safety and hygiene. We have them available for purchase at the studio if you do not own a pair.
What should I bring?
Just yourself! And perhaps a water bottle. All mats, props, and equipment are provided for your use.
