Our classical Pilates method honours traditional Pilates Method while adapting to your needs, with every session offering a pathway to graceful strength and mindful movement. Whether you’re seeking a private studio experience or a small group class environment, we offer personalised attention to guide you through each movement.

Our equipment is built exactly in the way Joseph Pilates designed. The reformers have 4 springs of equal tension with leather straps and wooden handles. Classical reformers don’t do the work for you in the way modern reformers can. They help you get the maximum benefit from each exercise.

At The Pilates Barns we help you reconnect with your body through timeless, equipment based Pilates instruction designed to restore balance, posture, and calm. 

We follow the traditional order of exercises on the reformer and mat; Joseph was a man ahead of his time and his order incorporates gradual progression and progressive overload. At the same time, we are evidence-based, utilising the latest science to ensure we teach in a way that serves you and your body best.

The Legacy of Pilates: Playful Precision

Joseph Pilates was passionate about helping people get fitter, stronger and more mobile. In recent years, Pilates has been seen as something only women do, or an exercise similar to yoga with lots of stretching. This actually couldn’t be further from what Joe intended! He created his system to help boxers, dancers and the average person. Whilst the exercises can include a stretching element at times, that was not his goal. He wanted to restore the body to good, pain-free movement.

In order to do this, he invented a range of equipment. The reformer is probably the most well known, but there is also the Cadillac – named after the car, the high chair, wunda chair (which converts to a normal chair so you could exercise at home!), and many other things. All of which you will use here at The Pilates Barns.
